Unveiling French Colonial History
with Jan Mammey and Falk Messerschmidt
Opening 01.02.2019, 19 h
Palais de la Porte Dorée
Hall Marie Curie
293, avenue Daumesnil
The artists Jan Mammey, Falk Messerschmidt and Fabian Reimann addressed French colonial History by leading a photographic investigation on the remnants still visible today in Paris and in France. Since 2016 an inventory listing numerous places has been set up, more than 2000 photographies have been taken. A selection of these images, as well as texts assembled by the artists, are projected on the Palais’ original furniture, in use during the 1931 Paris International Colonial Exhibition. On this occasion, showcases, libraries and easels have been taken out out the Palais’ deposits.
The exhibition takes its name from a famous documentary movie by Alain Resnais and Chris Marker. Released in 1953, the movie has been banned until 1964, because of its denunciation of colonialism.
Curated by Katharina Scriba (Goethe-Institut Paris) and Stéphane Malfettes (Palais de la Porte Dorée).
