A whirlpool has torn the coral-red oars off course, that’s the Mälström. This sculpture applies the design forms of a spatial drawing, as I have also used in figures such as the Friedung or Krupke. In these three-dimensional lines, narrative elements are added to the formal ones: the sculptures are composed of objects that suggest stories.
In the Mälström’s case, it is the sinking of an entire ship’s crew, a capsizing boat, perhaps already the lifeboat, which makes it as little as the ship that has already sunk. The literary allusions are not without intention, whether once again to Poe’s Arthur Gordon Pym or Ismail in Melville’s Moby Dick to the dead man’s box.
